Veterans Affairs

As a doctor who worked in the VA System, I can honestly say that I have not met more dedicated health professionals than those who provide care for our deserving veterans. Yet, this system often seems to fall short. While the financial resources provided certainly contribute to this, in my experience  the biggest obstacle is the system itself. It appears that each time the VA encounters a problem, the response is to add another layer of bureaucracy, making the overall organization less effective and efficient. I believe instead the focus should be on streamlining processes and procedures, making them more responsive to our veterans’ needs. Let us trust the dedicated employees in the VA System and free them to do their jobs more effectively. Recently passed legislation, The Veterans Affairs Accountability Act, better holds VA workers accountable for their performance, and as a result strengthens the system overall. This can be an important first step in providing better services to “those who have borne the battle.”
